Prince Edward
Island's Billy Roy Murnaghan is a survivor. Murnaghan has survived
more than 40 years in the music business and more recently has survived
a 5 year battle with colon cancer. After having undergone surgery
and a regimen of chemotherapy, the veteran entertainer, who now makes
his home in Barrie, Ontario, has just released his second thematic
collection of songs. The CD contains six tracks on which Murnaghan
has done country mixes and pop mixes of the tunes. Titled RU4-LUV
CAFE, this new release carries on the trend of Murnaghan‚s first
CD release FINE LINE. "I've decided to release my songs in a
thematic format, that is, songs that follow a particulr theme, and
will hopefully appeal to a niche segment of the music buying public."
he says.
Murnaghan is a prolific songwriter having started to write in the
mid 1960s. Now 70, he has played a historic role in P.E.I.'s musical
evolution. As founder, singer, and lead guitarist for P.E.I.'s first
rock group the Tremtones, Murnaghan blazed a musical trail that would
inspire countless Island bands for decades to come. For some five
years, he held down a steady gig at Charlottetown's popular Rollaway
Club. Murnaghan has written a song titled, 'I ROCKED WITH ELVIS',
which alludes to those carefree times while paying tribute to some
of his musical idols such as, Elvis, Rick Nelson, Jerry Lee Lewis,
Bill Hailey, and Fender Telecaster guitar legend, James Burton.
Murnaghan started out in music in his hometown, Charlottetown, where
his first gigs consisted of backing up local fiddlers at venues ranging
from house parties to country halls. Along the way he has played lead
guitar for a number of Canadian icons including Anne Murray, Stompin
Tom, Carroll Baker, Harry Hibbs and others. Murnaghan had a Canadian
country hit in 1976 with his hit, THE HOOKER. He credits CFCY's J.P.
Gaudet and the late Loman McAulay for having broken it on radio stations
across Canada.
Murnaghan was a winner in the 2006 'BARRIE SENIOR IDOL
CONTEST', held Feb.15th at the Barrie City Hall Rotunda and again in
2007 at the same venue.
Murnaghan was diagnosed with colon cancer in May, 2003, underwent
surgery in July of that year followed by a regimen of chemotherapy
through to February, 2004. He has been having regular check-ups and
tests since then and reports that so far, all is well. Despite the
uncertainty of one living with cancer, Murnaghan fully intends to
continue on with his music. "It's my passion, my addiction",
he says.
